bullet  General Notes:

Andrew was commissioned an Ensign in 50th (The Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot in 1847.
By February 1854, as Captain, he embarked with his regiment for Malta; from whence in June that year, he sailed on to Varna on the Black Sea, the main British base for operations in the Crimean War. He finally arrived at "The Seat of War", the Crimean Peninsula. He was present at the Battles of Alma in September and of Inkerman in November 1854 as well as the Siege and surrender of Sevastopol in the following year.
Andrew was amongst those British officers who served in the Crimea to be granted a Firman. This document was a decree by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, to recognise Andrew's service. Turkish troops were part of the Allied Forces in the campaign.
In 1856, Andrew left the Crimea with his regiment as a Brevet Major, having been awarded the Crimea Medal with clasps for the 2 battles and the Siege of Sevastopol, the Turkish Crimean War Medal and was one among 746 amongst the British Army appointed to the French Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur 5th Class. (The courtesy appointment of "Brevet" meant that an officer was referred to, and acted, above his substantive rank: for gallant or meritorious service).

Andrew was on active service with the 50th once again in the New Zealand wars, landing at Auckland in November 1863.
The regiment served in New Zealand from 1863 - 1867 and was present at the invasion of Waikato and Titokowaru's war 1865 and 1866 during the Second Taranaki War. He was awarded the NZ Medal and was Mentioned in Dispatches. In the same year Andrew was gazetted Brevet Lieutenant Colonel.
The regiment moved to Sydney, Australia in June 1867. Andrew returned to England in March 1869 and commanded the 50th from 1874 - 1879. In 1881 he is shown as a Colonel, commanding 11 Bridge Depot Infantry Brigade in Lancaster and he retired from the Army on half pay after this posting: as Honorary Major General. His medals were stolen about this time.

Rather surprisingly, an entry in Harts Army Lists shows Andrew as a Colonel in the Bengal, Madras and Bombay Armies. In 1888, he is listed as a retired Major General.

In 1871 before retiring, he and Catherine were lodging with a family called Enoch in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire,
at the time of the 1891 census, he was in Lexden in Essex, with Catherine and his niece Winifred Horsfall (described as scholar).
In the same year he acted as one of the executors of Andrew's will and is described as a retired Major General of Over Hall, Gestingthorpe, Essex. This was the home of the family of Captain Lawrence Oates who died on Captain Scott's fatal expedition to the South Pole in 1912.

It seems that General Lock was staying in William T Layards old house in Wandsworth when he died in 1896, aged 68.
