Adam TORLESSE of Whatcombe Fawley BRK [33357]
General Notes:
Placement of Adam as son of this William Torlesse is completely conjectural.
It appears he was an Organ builder.
Freeman, quoting the State Papers, Domestic, Coll. Sign Man. Car. 1, Vol. 10, no. 13, Provides the documentation (29 November 1628) for the construction of this instrument: Charles R Charles by the grace of God &c. To the Treasurer and Undertreasurer of the Exchequer for the time being. greeting. Whereas we have given order for the making of a new organ to be set up in the (Kings) private chapel in our Castle at Windsor. the charge whereof will amount to the sum of one hundred and forty pounds. we will and command you of our treasure in the receipt of our Exchequer forthwith to pay or cause to be paid unto Adam Torlesse. W. Rimbault read the name Fortess, it is indexed in the State Papers as Torlesse, and Freeman gives it as Fortress in MT 51 (1910): 379: obviously the script is hard to decipher, and to the best of my knowledge the name does not appear in any other document.
