William after his marriage emigrated to Sydney Australia with his wife and sister Mary via Grenock Scotland on the Barque "New York Packet", leaving 8 July 1841 arriving Sydney 23 Oct 1841 with 284 emigrants and passengers. The vessel on arrival was quarantined due to small pox, the immigrants were released about the 1st Jan 1842.
They were brought out as farm labourer and farm servant by one John Miller,
both were listed as Protestant, could read, and rated "health and strength and probable usefulness -very good". At the time of the birth of their first child, William was a labourer living in Goulburn NSW.
In 1844 William was a dairyman living at Moxton, then in 1846 a dairyman living in Burrowa. In 1850 he is recorded as a settler living at Bland Plains. In 1853 the family joined the gold rush at Sandhurst (now Bendigo). William was a carrier not a digger. In 1858 his address was Moranding where he bought a property. He bought the Homestead Block of Katandra Station in 1880
William's obituary says: " We regret to announce the death of Mr William Donaldson Katandra Home Station. Mr Donaldson was an old colonist and was for many years resident of the Kilmore district. He came to this locality about three years ago having purchased the Katandra Station where he has resided since. He was well known all through the district and was every where respected for his upright conduct and geniality.
He leaves a widow and grown up family. He was buried at Avenel Cemetery on 12 Feb 1883".

Williams Death Certificate states he was born in Derry Ireland, had spent 10 years in NSW, and 32 years in Victoria, and was aged 64 at his death

William married Rosanna (Rose) BURNS [30402] [MRIN: 10733], daughter of John BURNS [30687] and Jane [30688], in 1840 in Co Donegal. (Rosanna (Rose) BURNS [30402] was born on 23 Jan 1819 in Co Donegal and died on 16 Jul 1896 in Avenel , Vic.)
