Gilbert de Clare the Red 7th Earl of Hertford and 3rd Earl of Gloucester, was the eldest son and successor of Richard de Clare by his wife Maude, daughter of John de Lacy Earl of Lincoln. Gilbert was great great-grandson of Richard de Clare (Strongbow) Earl of Pembroke, the Conqueror of Ireland and his wife the Princess Eva daughter of Dermot King of Leinster.

Gilbert married Princess Joan PLANTAGENET of Acre [15717] [MRIN: 5591], daughter of King Edward I LONGSHANKS of England [15719] and Eleanor of CASTILE [15720].
