SUDDEN DEATH. A very sudden death occurred on Wednesday morning at the York Hotel, Rundle-street. The deceased is Mr. Charles Lloyd Hawker, of the Anlama Station, near Clare, son of the late Admiral Hawker, and brother to the Hon. the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of this province. The circumstances of the case, which are extremely melancholy, are shortly these. Mr. Hawker being about to visit England arrived in town on Thursday evening last, his intention being to proceed to Melbourne by an early steamer, and from thence to take ship for his native land. Accompanying him was Mrs. Hawker and three children, and they all proceeded to the York Hotel, which was usually Mr. Hawker's place of residence in Adelaide. The deceased appeared in unusually buoyant spirits. He had attended several fetes and parties during the Easter week, and on Tuesday visited several of his friends, retiring to rest as usual in good health. About half-past 8 o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Hawker arose, when her husband complained of a slight pain in the chest. As he was subject to such pains, she at once administered the usual remedy, sal volatile and peppermint, after taking which he expressed himself as greatly relieved, and said that "he would breakfast in bed." A cup of tea was sent to him, of which he drank half, and shortly afterwards Mrs. Hawker again proceeded to the room and asked him a question, but receiving no answer, and thinking him singularly still, she called a friend who endeavored to arouse him, but not succeeding, her brother, Mr. Digby, proceeded to the room, and thinking something the matter, at once sent for Dr. Moore, who was instantly in attendance, and pronouned Mr. Hawker to be quite dead. The body was lying on the left side, and presented as composed an appearance as in sleep, the hand resting upon the chin. Dr. Moore immediately examined the body, and from his past experience of the deceased, together with the circumstances of the case, gave a certificate to the effect that death resulted from disease of the heart. The Coroner was sent for, but on consulting with Dr. Moore, he deemed it unadvisable to hold an inquest, and gave the necessary certificate for burial. This melancholy circumstance threw quite a gloom over the city when it became known, and wherever we went the deepest sympathy was expressed with the bereaved. We believe that Mr. Hawker's funeral will take place to-day. Ref: The South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1858 - 1889) Thu 4 Apr 1861 Page 3
