  General Notes:

John was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal in 1857 while serving as a Lieut in the 82nd Foot (Prince of Wales Volunteers). He was based at Fort George and fought in China in the 1860's. In 1874 he was a Major with the 44th Foot (later called the East Essex Regiment). 1876-78 he served in India moving to Burma in 1878.
