bullet  General Notes:

Julia writes to Rosamond Stewart.
After three years on my own I decided to up sticks and come to Yorkshire near my daughter Philippa and family (1 Boy & 2 Girls). I have not regretted it for a moment, I have just the right house for me and it is wonderful country around. I also have a son who lives near Oxford, he has a boy and a girl. Incidentally my daughter is a nurse, and has just become a district nurse.

Dear Rosamond,
I was surprised to get your letter but interested that you wanted to write a life of Gramps.
I don't really know a great deal about Mabel. She was the youngest of Gramps family, very pretty and spoilt! She married Claud Laurence when only 20 and he was 21. Neither family approved of this marriage and Mabel did not have a good relationship with her mother - in - law. My grandfather (Claud) was a rich man and life was very easy for Mabel. Large houses, lots of staff etc. Then during the First World War he lost a fortune, and my grandmother is known to have told him to hurry up and make another one, which he did! There were 4 children, Esbell, Audrey/Jack - the twins, and Howard. Sadly Howard died in an accident during the 2nd World War and this finished my grandmother as she doted on him. She took to her bed and drugs and died (I think) in 1956. Although I saw quite a bit of them both, I never really felt at ease with either of them. I know that my mother was not happy at home and when she went to visit Rosamond in China she was determined not to come back unmarried, which she didn't.
I really don't know any of the Giles' although during the war and just after I met some of them but I have really forgotten whom.
Audrey and Jack are still alive - aged 94! Audrey is physically strong but has no short-term memory and is very repetitive, but knows who I am when I see her. Jack is v. frail but all there. His daughter Claudia sees to his welfare. And together we look after Audrey. Both are in retirement homes (different ones).
I do remember your mother and Rosamond and also the time you came to see us in Battersea. (1946 - 7).
I live in Yorkshire near my daughter and family (1 boy and 2 girls). I haven't regretted it for a moment. I have just the right house for me and it is wonderful country around. I also have a son who lives near Oxford (1 girl 1 boy).
Incidentally my daughter is a nurse and has become a district nurse, i.e. works in the community. I can't think of anything more to tell you. If you are on line then we could communicate that way. With love Julia.
