DEATH OF MRS CRESWELL
"When sorrows come , they come not single spies,
But in battalions."
How real this quotation seems to us in this small village. No sooner has the turf been put upon our late revered Vicar, and while the beautiful flower of the wreaths still look fresh upon his grave, than a further calamity has fallen upon the family. Mrs Creswell, sister to the late Rev. W. P. L. Hand, resided with her only daughter at Glenhurst, Guildford. Here she rendered great assistance to the parochial affairs of the parish. She was district visitor of St. Saviour's, was secretary of the National Society, and took keen interest in the poor of the parish of Littleton, near Guildford. Hearing of her brother's serious illness, she hastened to his bedside, where probably she contracted his malady, and notwithstanding all that medical skill and careful nursing could do, her natural force was unable to cope with the disease, and she passed quietly away on Saturday night, after barely a week's illness. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, in the beautiful churchyard of this parish, and a large number of people assembled to show their sympathy with the sorrowing relatives in this their double bereavement. The coffin made of polished English oak with substantial brass fittings, was the work of Mr. Raymond Collett, and the plate bore the following inscription:- "Mary Adelaide Creswell, died 24th March 1900, aged 59 years." The relatives present at the funeral were Miss Creswell (daughter), Mrs Collings (sister), Miss Hand, Miss Mary Hand, Miss Sybil Hand, Miss Winifred Hand, Mrs. Pole, Mr. Coombe, Mr. H. Eastwood, Mr. J. Hand, Mr. Sarel, Miss Wroe, and Mrs Faulkner. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. E. Peters, vicar of St. Saviour's, Guildford. Hymns 428, "O saints of God," and 438, "How bright those glorious spirits shine," were carefully sung by the choir, as was also the chanting of the 39th psalm. Wreaths and crosses were sent by Miss Creswell, Mrs Collings, Jack and Ethel Eastwood, Frank and Emma, Rear-Admiral Hand and family, Lena and Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McDonnell, Mrs Eusor, R. and H. Mangles, W. Molyneaux, Harry Hand, F. Cholmonderley, Frank and Ernest, Gertie, Cousins at Enton, Miss Wroe, Kitty and Daisy, and Barbara and her children.
