The following is in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Wingham. Kent.
This monument was erected in the year 1682 in memory of those of the branch of the family of OXINDEN, seated at Dene, who lie interred in this church whose ancestors have flourished in this county for several ages.
Of this family was Henry Oxinden who built Deane House, 2nd son of Edward Oxenden of Brook, Esq. This Henry has issue 2 sons, the first named Edward who became heir to Brooke and the 2nd Sir Henry who remains owner of Deane.
This Sir Henry by Elizabeth his wife, daughter and heir of James Brooker of Maydekin in Kent Esq. left issue Sir James Oxinden Kt. In memory of whom more especially his 3rd son Sir Geroge Oxinden Kt. (who died at Surat in East India, President for the honorable East India Company there and Governor of the Island and Castle of Bombay) gave a legacy of L300 for the erecting of this monument.
This Sir James died anno 1657 leaving issue by his Lady Margaret, daughter of Thomas Nevison of Eastry on this county Esq.
Sir Henry Oxinden Kt. and Baronet now living.
Others of this family seated at Deane who lye interred in this church are Dame Elizabeth, wife of Sir James who died 2nr September 1588.
Lady Margaret , wife of Sir James who died anno 1671
Dame Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Meredith of Leeds Abbey in this county, Bart. and 2nd wife to the present Sir Henry Oxinden Kt. & Bart. She was buried 20th August 1659.
Dame Susanna, eldest daughter of the said Sir Henry and Dame Elizabeth his wife who was married to Sir Robert Booth Kt late Lord Chief Justice of Ireland and died 27th October 1669.
