Effie was known as the "Fair Maid of Perth", a Victorian beauty, she became wife of John Ruskin, the marriage was unconsummated. After a notorious divorce, she married Ruskin's friend the painter John Millais R A. in 1854. They had eight children some of whom visited their uncle Melville at "Ashwick" Canterbury NZ.
It was said in the family that her marriage to Ruskin was unconsummated as he was offended by the sight of his wife's pubic hair? Their relationship has been the focus of numerous books, plays, films and an opera! with a variety of views on the matter.
