Expeditionary Force" (a work of reference, in that it contains a complete war record of all officers, nurses, and warrant officers who served with the N.Z. Expeditionary Force); and "The Work of the Church Among the White Settlers of New Zealand (1908); Member, Diocesan Synod and ex-Member of Diocesan Standing Committee. Represented Christchurch Anglican Synod at Pan Anglican Congress, 1908. Born: Hororata, New Zealand, February, 1863. Son of John and Lucy Ellen Sykes (nee Moorhouse) of Morton House, Carlyle, England, and one of the earliest pioneers, arriving in New Zealand in 1851, and later with his brother, under the firm name of Studholme Brothers, became one of the largest land holders in New Zea-land, owning many station properties, including Waimate, Owhaoko, Mangaohane, Murimutu, etc. Col. Studholme settled at Coldstream in 1887, and after following pastoral pursuits for many years, retired to live at Middleton Grange. Educated: Private School, England, Christ's College, Christchurch and Christ Church, Oxford. Always interested in education, he studied agricultural education and home science in U.S.A., and England. He initiated the home science at Otago University; Studholme House, Dunedin, a Department of Otago University bears his name. Commenced his military career as Trooper in C.Y.C. for three years; Lt. and later O.C. Ashburton Mounted Rifles; Major, 2nd. in Command, 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles; during the Great War he was temporarily in command of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles; served on Gallipoli; awarded D.S.O.; appointed Milltary Secretary and later Assistant Adjutant General N.Z. Expeditionary Forces on General Godley's staff, where he served in Egypt, France, Belgium and Germany; his War Service being from March, 1915 to January, 1920. Contested Ashburton seat in the interests of Reform 1902 and again in 1905. Married: Firstly, daughter of Archbishop Thomson of York. Issue: Three sons, John is studying Law in England, Richard H., is a Solicitor in England, and Derek S., is a sheep farmer at Coldstream. Secondly, Katherine, daughter of the Hon. Sir Charles Bowen, Private Secretary to John Robert Godley; founder of Canterbury; ex-Speaker, Upper House. Minister for Education in and about 1876 and author of the Education Act of 1877.
