  Research Notes:

The register of Bengal births for Calcutta has Richard Frederick's parents as Henry Frederick and Sarah. However, in October 1772, another son called Robert was born and here his father's names are transposed as Frederick Henry. The former is correct as Henry Frederick later published a book (1780) called The Intrigues of a Narob. In the book, he recounted the affair of his (common law) wife with Richard Barwell, a high ranking East India Company director. As the affair had allegedly commenced in 1769, Henry Frederick questions on two occasions in the book whether he is indeed the natural father of Richard and Robert. Interestingly, one of Richard Frederick's sons was named Charles 'Barwell' Thompson, suggesting that there was at least a strong attachment to Richard Barwell.

Richard Barwell was born on 8th October 1741 in Calcutta and died in 1804 in Sussex. He was the second of four sons of William Barwell (1705-1769), governor of Fort William and a high ranking director of the East india Company (as was his son, subsequently), and Elizabeth Pierce (1722-1771).
