OBITUARY
MRS. GEORGE ARMSTRONG, SEN,
It is with deep regret that we record the death of that greatly respected old settler, Mrs George Armstrong, of Mt. Vernon. She passed away at the ripe age of 72, on Wednesday last, and her kindly presence will be much missed by a large circle of affectionate friends. Mrs G. Armstrong, sen,, arrived in New Zealand in the ship London, landing in Wellington in the year 1840. Her maiden name was Cummerfield, and she has a brother and sister living in Foxton, namely, Mr E, Cummerfield and Mrs Robinson, relict of the late Capt Robinson, of the East India Company's service She was married to Capt. Armstrong on the 3rd April , 1851, by the Rev Cole, M A., by special licence. She leaves a family of six sons and three daughters to mourn her loss, namely, Mrs G. Dignan, Masterton ; Mrs A. L. Smith, Christchurch ; and Mrs J. F. Robinson Foxton. Her sons are Mr G. Armstrong jun , well known on the Peninsula, who is married to the eldest daughter of the late Capt. Grey, one of the oldest settlers of Nelson, and James Armstrong, who is married to a daughter of the late Mr Martin, of Tologoa Bay. The four remaining sons are single, namely, Joseph, John, Frederick and Lincoln. Soon after being married, Mr and Mrs Armstrong came to Akaroa, where she have resided ever since. Mr and Mrs Capt Armstrong saw New Zealand in its wild state, and on more than one occasion she has had to get out of the way of the Maoris She remembered the famous fighting chief Rauparaha, and on one occasion had to seek the protection of the friendly natives.
The funeral takes place tomorrow after noon.
