Well-Known Personality. The Late Mrs A Sinclair Thomson. A well-known figure in the Geraldine district and an early Canterbury pioneer, Mrs Annie Sinclair Thomson died at "The Crossing" Geraldine last week. Born at "Hambleden" Beeley Avenue, Christchurch, on July 15, 1862, Mrs Sinclair Thomson was a daughter of the late Mr George Gould, who arrived in Wellington in the Camilla, a small ship of 384 tons, on December 12, 1850; and subsequently settled in Christchurch. She was educated in Christchurch, and in December 1885 was married to Mr John Sinclair Thomson, of Lochaline, Argyllshire, who was at that time inspector for the National Bank of New Zealand, and who subsequently retired as manager of the Dunedin branch in 1909. He died at "The Crossing" Geraldine, in September 1928. After their marriage, Mr and Mrs Sinclair Thomson lived for a short time in Christchurch and then settled in Dunedin, where they remained until Mr Sinclair Thomson's retirement. They then moved to South Canterbury and made their home at "The Crossing" Geraldine. Both Mrs Sinclair Thomson and her husband were enthusiastic and expert gardeners, and made practically from nothing a very beautiful home at "The Crossing" Geraldine. During their period of residence in Dunedin they acquired "Goodwood Farm" about 30 miles from Dunedin, and many happy memories will remain those who in their younger days were fortunate enough to spend their school holidays with Mr and Mrs Sinclair Thomson and their family. Mrs Sinclair Thomson was always devoted to children and young people, and she was gifted with an exceptional understanding of children and their problems, a fact which drew them to her until the end of her life. It can truly be said that she mothered and was loved by a great number of children other than her own. Since she settled in Geraldine, just before the Great War, Mrs Sinclair Thomson's lovable disposition endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, and she will be sadly missed by a very wide circle of devoted friends and relatives. A devout church woman, Mrs Sinclair Thomson was an active worker in St Mary's parish. She also took a keen interest in local activities, such as the Plunket Society, the District Nursing Association, and the Horticultural Society, at which shows she was a regular exhibitor. Mrs Sinclair Thomson's family consisted of four sons and one daughter, Mrs RB Neil of "Barossa" Mount Somers. The elder son, Lt Kenneth Sinclair Thomson, of the 21st Indian cavalry, was killed in action in the 1st engagement in the Persian Gulf in April 1915; and the 3rd son, Capt Alastair Sinclair Thomson of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action in the Somme in July 1916. The two surviving sons served in the great War with the Royal Navy and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and these two sons are again serving their country, Capt Colin Sinclair Thomson with the Royal Navy, and Lt Hamilton Sinclair Thomson with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. During the great War Mr Mrs Sinclair Thomson went to England to be near their family, and for the rest of the time they both took an active part in the voluntary work at Walton Hospital. The funeral service was held in St Mary's Church, Geraldine, where the service was conducted by the Rev Canon AH Norris. Ref: Otago Daily Times 27 February 1940.
