Rev. George Downing Bowles

NOTE: George was a brother of Bridget & Frances Bowles, who were also born at Olveston in the 1780's. Both sisters married two Fripp brothers. Jane Strachey, born about 1820, was staying with Frances in 1841. She was a sister of Sir Richard Strachey who married George's daughter Caroline.


Jane Strachey married John Bowles Hare in 1842, a nephew of George. The Hare family of Bristol were another prominent family of Bristol.

A Finely Engraved Dutch Silver Marriage Casket, Probably Made By The Important Leeuwarden Silversmith Obbe Claesen, Circa 1625 the front side finely engraved with the personification of Love, flanked by coats-of-arms, the other sides engraved with personifications of Hope Faith, Patience, Fortitude, Justice, Temperance and Prudence, the hinged domed cover engraved with the marital emblem of the burning heart above hands joined in matrimony and a skull below within a roundel, surrounded by scrolling foliage, flowers and birds, the sides of the cover engraved with cherubs, swing moulded handle, the reverse struck with the maker's mark in the centre and inscribed with a legend: For my Son George Downing Bowles, Student of Christ Church, Oxford, 17 Aug. 1847 167gr., width 8.6cm.
