The Brandreths owned Houghton Hall in the 17th Century
Timeline.
1649 Alice Brandreth born, daughter of Henry I, a wealthy London merchant
1673 Henry I dies, his son Nehemiah I lives in Houghton Regis manor
house on north side of Houghton Green. (Nehemiah's wife Rebecca
(nee Price) writes 'The Compleat Cook')
1692 Alice Smyth nee Brandreth, widow of Ware in Herts, marries
William Milard, and buys land for Houghton Hall
1700 Houghton Hall completed
1719 Nehemiah I dies, Henry II inherits his estate (including Houghton
Regis manor)
1729 Alice dies, her nephew Nehemiah II inherits Houghton Hall and
grounds
1730 Henry II dies, Henry III inherits his estate
1746 Nehemiah II dies, his son Thoswihan I inherits
1750 Houghton manor estate sold to Duke of Bedford and Brandreths
remain as his tenants
1752 Thoswihan I dies, his son Thoswihan II inherits
1788 Thoswihan II dies, his son Henry IV inherits
1793 Henry IV marries heiress Dionisia Turner and is subsequently able
to re-purchase the manor estate
1796 Pre-enclosure landscape of strips in open fields recorded at
Houghton Regis as part of process of Enclosure
1826 Bryant map records first part of Houghton Hall Park, the north-west
corner
1846 Henry IV dies and leaves estate to his nephew Humphrey Gibbs
(born 1807) on condition he takes the Brandreth name and arms
1848 Cumberland survey records complete Houghton Hall Park
1851 Humphrey signs a contract with builder Samuel Grimsdell for
£4,508 for works to Houghton Hall under the direction of architect
H Clutton
1864 Humphrey dies leaving the estate to his son Henry (born 1856)
1879-84 Ordnance Survey records the kitchen garden, East Wood and 3
oval clumps for the first time
1900-04 Ordnance Survey records South Wood for the first time
1908 Henry dies, Houghton Hall, grounds and park are sold to Colonel
and Mrs Dealtry Part . . . . .
