Charles had an adventurous childhood that provided him with skills, independence and resilience. He returned from Raoul Island to Mangonui New Zealand with his parents when he was 10yrs old. Charles had a love of the sea and was appointed as Master to a number of ships at a very young age. He became a leader who was respected by those who worked under his command and highly thought of in his community. 100yrs on The NZ HERALD 1983 Talks of him being one of NZs greatest seaman, of being an honourable man who was a staunch friend and a loving father.
Charles married Susan Holland 1 September 1868 in Auckland. Charles and Susan had 9 children 4 boys and 5 girls.
