Lise was an author (pen name Lise Boehm), researcher and proof reader for her father and husband. Married aged 23 she lived 10 years in China, died age 61.

1921.MRS. H. A. GILES.
Mrs. Giles, wife of Dr. H. A. Giles, the distinguished Chinese scholar, Professor of Chinese at Cambridge, died at Cambridge on December 17, aged 61.
She was Elise Williamina. daughter of the late Rev. Alfred Edersheim, D.D. At the age of 17 she became secretary to her father, and worked with him for seven years on his magnum opus, "The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah", learning among other things enough Hebrew to be able to hunt up or verify references; and finally she was responsible for the voluminous index, all of which help was acknowledged in the preface to the first edition (1883) in the following terms :- "And so these seven years passed with no other companion in study than my daughter, to whom I am indebted, not only for the Index Rerum, but, for much else, especially for a renewed revision in the proof-sheet's, of the references made thoughout these volumes." He also contributed to the publications of the Religious Tract Society " The Laws and Polity of the Jews " and " The Rites and Worship of the Jews."
After her marriage, at the age of 23, she spent nearly 10 years in China, and in spite of serious ill-health during the later years managed to publish, under the pen-name of Lise Boehm, a series of " China Coast Tales," filling two good-sized volumes and illustrative of the social life of the-foreigner at the Open Treaty Ports. But her greatest feats lay in the direction of proof-reading. A hyphen or a full stop upside down would form no trap for her unerring eye; and students who used her husband's " Chinese-English Dictionary " in its first edition, and those who now use the samein its second edition, as well as his Chinese Biographical Dictionary owe her a deep debt for the typographical accuracy in each case not only of the English text, but, also of the immense number of Chinese characters with which she had learned to deal.
