Dennis O'Rorke was the son of E. Dennis O'Rorke and Amy Clifford O'Rorke, of Auckland.

"After one year's work with the O.T.C., was sent to Sandhurst for three months, being too young to hold officer's rank. He afterwards obtained his commission in the 3rd Battalion King's Royal Rifles, and left for the front as Galloper to General Fortesque. In April he was slightly wounded, but soon returned to duty. The following June he became ill from the effects of gas poisoning, and was sent back to England. When General Fortesque returned home, he was appointed Galloper to General Smith.
