Joseph joined the British Army to fight the Germans hoping as many Republican Irish did that such a loyal act would be rewarded by Westminster with Irish Home Rule. Sadly it did not, many republicans that served were villified by their community upon returning to Ireland. Irish resistance hardened to demanding independance from Britain and "the troubles" continued for most of the century.
