OBITUARY.
Mr T. I. SMAIL. The death occurred on Sunday of Mr Thomas Ingram Smail, whose name has been closely associated with social service work in Christchurch for many years. Mr Smail, who was in his 70th year, was a native of Berwiek-on-Tweed. He came to New Zealand 45 years ago, and followed commercial life for a few years. Thereafter he became a lay evangelist, and devoted himself to social work, his lay-reading being under Bishop Julius. The late Mr Smail periodically visited the gaols, the old Samaritan Home, the Te Oranga Home, the Burnham Industrial School, the Government Receiving Home, and the Female Refuge. He was also a prominent worker in the Prison Gate Mission. Four years ago he was appointed by the Government as visitor and patients' friend at Sunnyside Mental Hospital. He leaves a widow, two daughters, and one son. Before the proceedings commenced at the Magistrate's Court this morning, the Rev. Frank Rule, social worker, at the request of the Magistrate (Mr S. E. McCarthy, S.M.), made reference to the death of Mr Smail. Mr Rule said that Mr Smail had been a prominent figure in the Court for 25 years. On behalf of the court ofiicials he wished in this public way to tender their sympathies to the relatives and friends of the deceased. Whilst Mr Rule was speaking those in court stood as a mark of respect to the deceased. The funeral took place this morning.
