Bobbie J. Glisson,
Yesterday, I found copies of some pages from "Genealogy of The Steele Family" by Daniel Steele Durrie, 1859, pub. Munsell & Rowland, Albany, N. Y. In the back of this book, Durrie had one page on Sir Richard Steele Family. In his book, he did not add the "e" to the Steel name. I will quote part of his research.
"This family is of English extraction, and the first found mentioned is Robert Steel, who held a place of consequence in the Court of Queen Anne. He died soon after 1714, and had a son.
Robert, who married Miss Lander, and lived at Cove, in the county of Cork; he had a son.
Robert, who married his 2d cousin,no issue.
Richard Steel, a brother of the first Robert (above), settled in Cork county, and married Miss Hart; had one son, Sir Richard Steel of Hampstead, his heir, and had children.
Sir Parker Steel, Bart.. . . .
Sir Richard, the present Baronet, 1811; Robert, Parker, Frederick Armstead and three daughters.
Sir Richard Steel, the present Baronet entered the army at 16 years of age in 1723; he has one son, Richard, born 1802, and six daughters.
Sir Richard Steel, the author, was cousin to the first Sir Richard of Hampstead; was born at Dublin, in 1695 (his father was counselor at law and private secretary to James I, Duke of Ormond); . . . he died at his seat in Wales, Sept. 1, 1829; he was twice married; his first wife was a lady of Barbadoes, with whom he had a valuable plantation on the death of her brother; his second was a daughter of Jonathan Scurlock, Esq.. . . [Durrie apparently did not do a great deal of research on Sir Richard Steele as was done by George A. Aitken in his book, "The Life of Richard Steele". According to Aitken, Steele was born on March 12, 1761 or 1762 (new style) and died on September 1, 1729. He left no heirs].
The Durrie data did show the relationship of Sir Richard Steele, the Author, to other Steeles in Ireland. I realize that other researchers have a Sir Richard Steele as their ancestor, but it was not Sir Richard Steele, the author.
