It is told of Anna that she had a Sunday school class when she was five years old, and it is hard to know if teacher or taught were more to be pitied; but it is very clear that she rebelled on every possible occasion, and was a high-spirited, quick-tempered, affectionate child, without a trace of the priggishness which might reasonably have been expected from such upbringing.
Anna shared the mental capacity of the family, and devoted herself from girlhood to raising the standard of the labouring classes in her father's parish at Hinton Martell in Dorsetshire, whither the familly migrated in later years. She educated the boys and girls of the village, started a cooperative store, and identified herself with the agricultural labourer in his struggle against oppression.
