Ex-Warder's Death Verdict of Murder. A verdict of murder against some man un- known was returned by the City Coroner (Mr. E. A. May) at the conclusion of the in- quest yesterday into the death of William Alfred Gaggin, 39, an ex-warder, who died in hospital as the result of a blow received in a brawl outside a hotel in Crown-street, city, on June 1. Carl Christian Rasmussen, contractor, in a statement read in court, said that on the afternoon of June 1 he had been drinking with Gaggin in a hotel in Crown-street, when the deceased and a man whom he did not know began a conversation, which ended in them both leaving the hotel. He heard a disturbance outside, and on going to the door, saw a number of men fighting. Gaggin and the man with him were knocked down by two men. Gaggln's head hit the edge of the kerbing. Lawrence Farnell, the man who had been in Gaggin's company when he was knocked down, said that he could remember nothing of what happened, he was very drunk at the time. Police evidence was to the effect that the man who had hit Farnell had been traced, but the man who was alleged to have struck Gaggin could not be found. Ref: Trove.
