Hugh is of Filleigh and Wear Gifford, a descendant of Sir John Fortescue Kt. Lord Chief Justice of England in 1442 and author of the celebrated work "De Laudibus Legum Anglia:" and ancestor of the present noble house of Fortescue whose history has been compiled by a distinguished scion, Lord Clermont.
