Thomas was a twin. Their maternal grandfather died two hours before they were born. Their mother was unable to nurse them, fearing a cancer in her breast.
She writes on 3 Nov 1832 of the death of her son in Jamaica: " a great sorrow to me, yet I could not reflect on myself as I, and indeed all of us persuaded him not to go, and offered him any other calling but his mind was set on going".
