bullet  General Notes:

Arthur Henry Giles family spent a good deal of time living apart from their parents.
(on back of an undated letter from her brother Arthur to their mother)
Dear Mother
We are going on the 31st of ….to Aunt Isabellas and shall stay. I shall like it very much. I think I can speak French a little and can read it also a little. The lessons I like best are reading, poetry, music. I have nothing more to say so Good bye. I remain your loving daughter Madeline

My dear Marion,
I do like the blue paper you wrote on very much.
I am very sorry that you have to wear a pair of glasses and I hope your sight will be better when you come back to us. On Saturday Mrs. Baguby is going to have some poor children over here to tea. I do not know anything to draw now but perhaps I will draw something next time I write to you. I do not know anything more to say so Good bye. I remain your loving sister Madeline

My dear Marion,

My dear Arthur
I am writing you a short note to tell you that Francis has a little sister, fancy that, she is about six days old so he will no longer be the baby. One day Aunt Ellen asked him whether he would like a baby sister and he said "I would murder it" but instead of that he is very pleased. I am sending you two flowers which I picked up in the conservatory, the one white one is a double begonia I do not know the name of the other. I suppose you know that Miss Biggs and Francis are both gone and that I shall
to school with Dolly at Weston next term. I have no one to play with now and that is the reason of my writing you this note. I get up early sometimes and go out and pick mushrooms which we have for breakfast. I am sending you a penny stamp and hope you will write to me with it. I ride on the box of the carriage now as Francis has gone. I went to a Bazaar at Winscombe yesterday it was very nice. Now good bye as there's no more news, give my love to everybody from Madeline
PS Mind you write to me or I'll be cross.

Hi Dear Arthur - boy
Please to read this letter when you are going to school. I am not going to keep the ring I got in lottery, so you may do what you like with yours. Please to tell Kathleen to address any letters (if she writes to me) to "Miss Helen Giles" and I shall address mine to her like this "Miss May Giles", if a letter comes addressed like that it is for her. I have nothing to say except Good bye from Helen Giles or Mad (Madeline)Giles

Dear Arthur
Thank you very much indeed for the scent and brooch you sent me, I like them very much. Aunt Isabell gave me a shilling and a …. Aunt Ellen gave me a brooch which she had when she was twelve and a little cedar box. Gran gave me two shillings and I bought two bracelets with it. D (Dorothea known as Dolly) and L (Laura) gave me one shilling each. D is now writing a letter to L all about the things we eat. Do you like Gordon's College. I should think you do. D and I climbed the big tree today do you ever climb now, can Lance climb. You need not answer this letter as I know you hate writing letters just as much as I do. D gave me this paper and a lot more of different colours. Now good bye love to all Madeline
