bullet  General Notes:

Hand, John, s, of John of Wick, Dorset, pleb. Christ Church, matric. 22 March, 1745-6, aged 18; All Souls Coll., BA 1749; (?bar-at-law, Inner Temple, 1752 at his admission he is described as son of John of the Inner Temple). Ref: Oxford University Alumni, 1500-1886

Anthony Turreff writes 2016.
John was admitted to the Inner Temple 15 Feb 1743 and called to the bar in 1752.
Ordained later the church of St Laurence, Upton (near Eton College), Slough, Bucks has a wall plaque in the church which confirms that John was the vicar there from 1754 - 1759, although further evidence suggests that he was vicar until 1806. The clergy records confirm that he was instituted 30 June 1760 and remained there until 30 July 1804 when he became the rector of Adstock until his death, which they recorded as 02 June 1809. He and his wife are buried in the churchyard grave n° 213 close to the main door, but the inscription is no longer legible. However the church records show that Rev John Hand died 15 March 1809 aged 82 and that his wife Elizabeth died 11 april 1792 . They were buried together. Although recorded as vicar until 1759 he was still there in 1790/91 as I have a copy of the Banns of Marriage records which were signed by him (courtesy of Paul Tubb). The History of Upton-cum-Chalvey records that he was installed as vicar in 1759 and ceased in 1806. It also records that he was Chaplain to King George III, and that his epitaph described him as "a man of primitive manners and unaffected piety". The vicarage was in the gift of the Crown and the Rectory was owned by Eton College. In 1831 the benediction was worth L8 a year and the church received a Royal bounty of L200 a year.

By the will of his mother in law he and his wife were left a freehold farm, house and land in Clewer. The Poll Books for 1796 record John as owner of the freehold of a dwelling at Clewer, Berkshire occupied by Henry Hopkins. He is also recorded in the Poll Books for 1802 and 1804 as a freehold owner

Will of Reverend John Hand, Clerk of New Windsor , Berkshire Date: 20 April 1809 PROB 11/1496/168.
